About Montgomery

Living in Montgomery

Montgomery is a small city in Montgomery County with a big place in Texas history. Founded in 1837 in what was then the Lake Creek Settlement, it became the first county seat and was incorporated in 1848. The town calls itself the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag, honoring local resident Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart, whose design was adopted by the Republic of Texas in 1839. A building boom in the 1850s left behind fine homes, several of which still stand. Today the town’s history is still visible in its older homes and in the way the community has kept its small town scale even as the area around it has grown.

Today Montgomery blends that history with lake living. The city sits beside Lake Conroe, and State Highway 105 runs through town along Eva Street, connecting residents to Conroe to the east. Downtown has a historic business district, and the surrounding area includes several of the best known Lake Conroe communities, from gated golf and waterfront neighborhoods to newer subdivisions. The population has grown quickly, rising from 621 in 2010 to 1,948 in 2020, and the area around the city has grown even faster. Lake Conroe itself covers about 21,000 acres, and many of the neighborhoods near Montgomery are built around its coves, marinas and golf courses.

Public schools are part of Montgomery ISD, which serves high school students at Montgomery High School and Lake Creek High School. Some homes with Montgomery addresses fall in other districts, so we confirm the zoned schools for every property. Homes near the lake or Lake Creek get a review of the flood zone and seller disclosures before you make an offer. Montgomery ISD has opened newer campuses as the area has grown, including Lake Creek High School, so we check the current boundaries for every property.

Buyers come to Montgomery for different reasons. Some want acreage and a slower pace, some want a weekend place on the water, and others want a full time luxury home on Lake Conroe with Houston still within reach. We help you sort through the options and focus on the part of the area that fits your goals. Inside the city, buyers find historic homes, newer subdivisions and small acreage properties within a short drive of the historic district. Just outside, gated lake communities such as Bentwater, April Sound and Walden offer golf, marinas and waterfront estates for buyers seeking a luxury lake home. We help you compare those options honestly, from taxes and association fees to commute times.
