About East Downtown (EaDo)
Living in East Downtown (EaDo)
East Downtown, known to almost everyone as EaDo, sits just east of Downtown Houston and north of the Gulf Freeway, between the George R. Brown Convention Center and the East End. The name was chosen in 2008 from public suggestions, and the rebrand rolled out the following year. For buyers who want to live close to Downtown jobs, sports and entertainment, it has become one of the most talked about areas inside the Loop.
The neighborhood has layers of history. Beginning in the 1950s, Chinese businesses moved to the southeastern edge of Downtown, and by the 1980s Vietnamese and other East Asian families had added supermarkets, restaurants and a theater. As many of those businesses moved to today’s Chinatown in southwest Houston, warehouses and small homes remained. The Texas Guandi Temple and the Kim Son headquarters are still part of the streetscape, and St. Nicholas Church is described as Houston’s oldest Black Catholic church.
The modern turn came with the stadium. Shell Energy Stadium, home of the Houston Dynamo and Texas Southern University football, seats more than 22,000, and Daikin Park is nearby. Since then, many older houses have been replaced by townhomes, and angular new condo buildings now stand beside low slung warehouses. Buyers today will find townhomes, condos and some single-family homes, and an artists’ community has been growing here since around 2010. In 2026 the area hosted the Houston FIFA Fan Festival during the World Cup.
Getting around is easy. METRORail’s EaDo/Stadium station serves the Green and Purple lines, and the Leeland/Third Ward station is on the Purple Line. The East Downtown Management District oversees improvements in the area. Public schools are in Houston ISD, and we confirm the zoned campuses for each address.
If you own a townhome in EaDo, you are competing with plenty of new construction, so pricing and presentation matter. Stacy can show you what your EaDo townhome is worth and how to reach the buyers who want this location. If you are moving up and need to sell first, we can coordinate both sides of your move.
