About Medical Center

Living in Medical Center

The Medical Center area surrounds the Texas Medical Center, often described as the largest medical center in the world. The campus covers about 2.1 square miles in south central Houston, just south of the Museum District, with Hermann Park to the north, Rice University and Southampton to the west and Brays Bayou to the south and east. For the many doctors, nurses, researchers and students who work here, living nearby can turn a long commute into a few minutes.

The scale here is hard to overstate. The Texas Medical Center has been called a medical mini city, with more than 100,000 people working on campus according to a 2011 count, and its institutions draw patients and professionals from around the world. Rice University and the Museum District sit right next door, so residents have culture, dining and campus life within a short drive or rail ride.

Housing near the Medical Center includes patio homes, townhomes and mid-rise and high-rise condominiums, with established single-family neighborhoods close by. The METRORail Red Line runs along Fannin Street with several stops serving the campus, and Hermann Park and Helix Park, which opened in 2023, offer green space. Many homes and condos here are a short walk or ride from Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo stop on the rail line and the Museum District, so residents can enjoy the city without fighting traffic. Public schools are in Houston ISD, and we confirm zoning by address. Because parts of the area sit near Brays Bayou, we review the flood zone and disclosures for every home, as we do everywhere.
