About River Oaks
Living in River Oaks
River Oaks is the neighborhood most people picture when they think of Houston luxury real estate. Brothers Will and Mike Hogg began developing it in the 1920s as a planned residential community west of downtown, with deed restrictions that still shape its wide lots and setbacks today. Large estate homes in Georgian, Tudor, Mediterranean and modern styles sit behind manicured lawns on streets shaded by live oaks.
The River Oaks Country Club anchors the neighborhood, and Buffalo Bayou runs along its northern edge near Bayou Bend, the former Ima Hogg estate that is now part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Shopping and dining are close at the River Oaks Shopping Center on West Gray and in nearby Upper Kirby, and the neighborhood is minutes from downtown, the Galleria and Greenway Plaza.
Homes here change hands less often than in most Houston neighborhoods, and many trade on lot value as much as on the house. We price River Oaks property from true peer sales and review deed restrictions with buyers before they plan a renovation or rebuild.
