About The Heights

Living in The Heights

The Houston Heights began in 1891 as one of the first planned communities in Texas, built on higher ground northwest of downtown. It was an independent city until Houston annexed it in 1918. Today the Heights blends restored Victorians and Craftsman bungalows with modern new construction, and several sections are protected historic districts with design guidelines for exteriors.

Heights Boulevard, with its wide esplanade and walking path, runs through the center of the neighborhood. The 19th Street shopping district, local restaurants and coffee shops, and the Heights Hike and Bike Trail make it one of Houston’s most walkable areas. Downtown is just a few miles south.

Buyers find everything from cottages to large custom homes and townhomes on the edges. In historic districts, exterior changes need city approval, so we review district rules with buyers who plan to renovate or add on.
