About Upper Kirby
Living in Upper Kirby
Upper Kirby takes its name from Kirby Drive and sits right in the middle of everything, south of River Oaks, north of West University Place and east of Greenway Plaza. Westheimer Road, Shepherd Drive, Buffalo Speedway and Bissonnet Street frame the district, and its own management district has worked for years to give the area a distinct identity with landscaping and public improvements.
The district’s look has a story behind it. Before the management district formed, the area had no distinct identity, so its founders borrowed British touches to create one, at one time adding red phone booths and a double-decker bus that shuttled diners between restaurants. Local landmarks include the 1939 Alabama Theatre building, now a Trader Joe’s, and the River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics, a former county schoolhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
The housing here is varied, which is part of the appeal. Buyers will find single-family homes, townhomes and mid-rise and high-rise condominiums, and more than half of the area’s housing units were built after 1999. On the luxury side, towers such as 2727 Kirby, a 30 story condominium with 96 residences, offer full service high-rise living with a River Oaks address nearby. Levy Park, renovated and reopened in 2017, gives residents a dog park, open lawn and a softball field, and St. John’s School and a YMCA are close by. Upper Kirby is in Houston ISD, and we confirm zoned schools for each address.
If you own a condo or townhome here, the right comparison sales matter, because buildings and floor plans vary so widely. Stacy can show you what your Upper Kirby home is worth and how it stacks up against the inventory buyers are touring right now.
