About Rice Military
Living in Rice Military
Rice Military is a compact inner city neighborhood with a name that tells its story. It sits between Washington Avenue on the north and Buffalo Bayou on the south, with Shepherd Drive to the east and Westcott Street to the west. The “Military” comes from nearby Camp Logan, a World War I Army training camp whose grounds later became Memorial Park. The “Rice” comes from the family that once owned the land, including William Marsh Rice, whose fortune founded Rice University.
The original homes here were small bungalows and shotgun houses. With relatively few building restrictions, the neighborhood transformed over the past two decades, and today buyers will find single-family homes, two and three story townhomes and condominiums. That mix makes Rice Military a popular choice for people who want low maintenance living close to the action. Luxury buyers have taken note, too: a 37 story tower of 93 condominiums carrying the St. Regis name was announced at 102 Asbury Street, near Memorial Drive and Buffalo Bayou, a sign of how much demand there is for high-end homes in this corner of the city.
Location is the big draw. Memorial Park is just to the west, River Oaks is across the bayou and Washington Avenue brings restaurants and nightlife to the neighborhood’s doorstep. Close to home, Nellie Keyes Park has a playground and trails, the quirky Beer Can House is a local landmark, and the Brunner-Harmonium Historic District preserves a block of eight homes designated in 2022. The Rice Military Civic Club keeps neighbors connected.
Rice Military is in Houston ISD, and we confirm the zoned schools for any address. St. Theresa School, a Catholic K through 8 campus, is in the area. Because the neighborhood borders Buffalo Bayou, we review the flood zone, elevation details and seller disclosures for every home we show here, just as we do everywhere.
With so many similar townhomes on the market, sellers here benefit from careful pricing and strong presentation. Stacy can walk you through what your Rice Military townhome is worth and what sets it apart from the one down the street. If you are ready for more space and need to sell before you buy, we can coordinate both moves.
